Back to teaching - October 17, 2017

This morning we went with Elder and Sister Lathen to The University of Sri Jayewardenepura to watch how they teach the students English. They did a fine job of using the "I Do", "We Do", "You Do" model. The students were engaged and practicing English. While we were helping a group of students I had a student say that I was beautiful, like Princess Diana. Wow, what a compliment! I think I like it here. 😄

After class we were invited to their faculty meeting. It was just like home. The Department Head discussed the same issues as we have, getting students ready for the writing exam! He suggested they have a rubric (sound familiar?) They went over some of the writing prompts and also helping students get scholarships. Sounds like it's the same issues wherever you go.

                                                      University Entrance

This is a picture of a typical classroom. Desks and chairs have been well used. Only a portable white board with the computer and projector on a table.

Another view of the classroom.  This University was built in the 1800's. It was later converted to be used as a prison. Bars are still on the windows that have no glass. There is no air-conditioning.  Only portable fans hanging on the walls. Our typical portable classroom in Utah would be heaven to them.

We then left campus to have our District Meeting and discuss our goals for the week. Had lunch, worked on getting a DVD player working  (which we never did get it fixed) and then back to the Church to help teach English.

After a busy day we as Senior couples and the Lee's visiting family had dinner at a very nice restaurant called The Cinnamon Lakeside Dining. It was an all you can eat buffet. We started out with some drinks. Fresh mango and orange juice. It sure did taste good. Then filled up on salads, pasta, rice, potatoes, the list goes on and on. Of course we had to have dessert with ice cream. We were so full by the end of the night and so ready for bed.
